Start in the iconic capital of Tokyo, taking in the city’s intoxicating blend of extreme modernity and ancient heritage. From Tokyo, take the train to Hakone, famous for its hot springs and gateway to the Mt. Fuji region. Take two days to relax and explore the beautiful town before boarding the world-famous Shinkansen bullet train for the journey to hilly Takayama. Change onto the Limited Express Hida Wideview, one of the most scenic trains in Japan, for the last part of the ride, winding through stunning mountains and gorges. From there, spend time discovering important sights and historical landmarks in Kanazawa, Hiroshima, and finally Kyoto. DAY 1 - ARRIVE IN TOKYO
Welcome to the vibrant, buzzing metropolis that is Tokyo! Transfer from the airport to your hotel and check in for a three-night stay. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure discovering the many sights and sounds of the city.  (Overnight in Tokyo)

DAY 2 - TOKYO
Enjoy a fascinating day tour of the capital city today led by a knowledgeable, local guide. First visit Tokyo’s old town, Asakusa, and soak in the atmosphere of the Tokyo of old. Then travel down the Sumidagawa River on Tokyo’s Water Bus to Hamarikyu garden, a stunning traditional Japanese garden surrounded by towering skyscrapers – the perfect example of the startling contrast of old and new that defines the city. DAY 3 - TOKYO
Today your discovery of Tokyo will focus on the city’s world-renowned, seafood-based cuisine. Start with a tour of Tsukiji Market, the largest fish market in the world featuring hundreds of different fish and fish products. Then, visit a typical Japanese home and learn to prepare different types of fresh sushi, which you will then feast on for lunch. (Overnight in Tokyo) B, L

DAY 4 - TOKYO TO HAKONE
Take the scenic train journey to Hakone today, the gateway to the Mt. Fuji region. You will be staying in a traditional Japanese ryokan, featuring sublime hot spring baths (onsen) and delicious cuisine. Set out to explore the picturesque region at your leisure today using your Hakone Pass. Ride the world’s second longest cable car to the top of Mt. Owakudani, or glide across volcanic Lake Ashi on a majestic replica pirate ship. Or simply discover the many museums, shops and shrines located in the area. (Overnight in Hakone) B, D

DAY 5 - HAKONE TO TAKAYAMA
Depart Hakone today on the world-famous Shinkansen bullet train, reaching speeds of over 185 miles per hour. Then change onto the Limited Express Hida Wideview train – considered one of the most scenic train journeys in Japan – and admire the spectacular scenery as the train winds its way through deep gorges and tall mountains to the town of Takayama. After settling in at your hotel, discover the town at your leisure, perhaps taking in one of the many sake breweries, sources entirely from the area’s clean water. (Overnight in Takayama) B

DAY 6 - TAKAYAMA
After breakfast this morning, explore more of Takayama at your leisure. Head to the lively Miyagawa morning markets for local crafts and produce or take the short bus ride to Hida No Sato Folk Village, an open-air museum displaying traditional buildings from the Hida region. Later, visit the Takayama Festival Floats Museum or simply stroll through the beautifully-preserved old town. (Overnight in Takayama) B

DAY 7 - TAKAYAMA TO KANAZAWA
Use your included coach tickets today to visit Shirakawago village, the UNESCO World Heritage Listed site famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses. Afterwards, continue on to Kanazawa by coach and check in at your hotel for a two-night stay. (Overnight in Kanazawa) B

DAY 8 - KANAZAWA
Discover Kanazawa at your leisure after breakfast this morning. The capital of Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture boasts numerous historical attractions including impressive residences, and modern museums. Not to be missed though is Kenrokuen, ranked as one of the top three landscape gardens in Japan and considered by many to be the most beautiful. A visit to the stunning garden is not to be missed in any season. (Overnight in Kanazawa) B
 
DAY 9 - KANAZAWA TO HIROSHIMA
Take the four hour train ride from Kanazawa to Hiroshima today and on arrival, spend the remainder of the day at your leisure discovering the city. (Overnight in Hiroshima) B

DAY 10 - HIROSHIMA
Enjoy a day tour of Hiroshima today, and discover why the city is now known as a beacon of peace. Start with a visit to the stunning Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, which was ground zero for the Atomic Bomb in 1945 and is dedicated to those who lost their lives in the attack. From Hiroshima, take the short ferry ride to Miyajima Island, where you will come upon the Floating Torii Gate, the most photographed place in all of Japan. Explore the islands many shrines and temples, and sample delicious local cuisine before heading back to your hotel. (Overnight in Hiroshima) B

DAY 11 - HIROSHIMA TO KYOTO
Today, board the Shinkansen again for the two-hour journey to Kyoto. Later this afternoon, you will get to learn about Kyoto’s typical kappo cuisine and take part in a private cooking lesson. Enjoy being the chef and creating these traditional masterpieces! (Overnight in Kyoto) B

DAY 12 - KYOTO
Take a guided tour of Kyoto today, visiting some of the most impressive World Heritage Sites of the city. Begin with a visit to Kinkakuji Temple, one of Kyoto’s most famous temples and a former retirement villa for the Shogun. Also tour the stunning Nijo Castle, an architectural achievement exquisitely surrounded by water and beautiful gardens. Wander around Nishiki Market, a five-block long shopping street lined by more than 100 shops and restaurants. (Overnight in Kyoto) B

DAY 13 - KYOTO
Take the short train ride to Nara today for a guided tour of Japan’s former capital for 74 years during the 8th century. Many of the impressive temples and shrines of the period remain, incredible testaments to prosperity of the time. Animal lovers will enjoy taking a stroll through Nara Park – called Deer Park by locals – home to more than 1,000 tame deer. (Overnight in Kyoto) B

DAY 14 – DEPART TOKYO
Depart Kyoto and take the 2.5-hour ride on the bullet train to Tokyo Narita Airport for your continued travels. For clients with an early morning flight, we suggest adding one night in Tokyo at the end of the tour in order to have time to get to the airport. Airport transfer is included even if the additional night is added. B
