Carcassonne

The most complete medieval fortified city still in existence, Carcassonne looks like something out of a fairytale. Nestled in the lovely Languedoc region, the city’s most famous landmark is its medieval, turreted old town, known as La Cité. This UNESCO World Heritage Site began life as a Roman fort in 100 BC. Mingle with locals at the weekly market, and admire the marble fountain on the Place Carnot. As much of a draw as the city itself is the man-made Canal du Midi, found on the outskirts of Carcassonne and a perfect, tranquil day out.
